Anthropic tax exemption: Tax IDs, billing details, and support
2026-09-24
Adding a tax ID to an Anthropic account is not the same as receiving a tax exemption. Whether tax applies depends on the product, customer, location, and rules for that transaction.
If you need an exemption for Claude or the Claude API, confirm the basis for it, make sure the billing details are correct, and ask Anthropic support how to submit the required evidence. Do not assume an EIN or VAT number automatically removes tax.
Tax ID vs. tax exemption
| Item | What it does |
|---|---|
| Tax ID | Identifies a person or business for a tax system |
| Billing address | Helps establish the location associated with the purchase |
| Exemption evidence | Supports a specific claim under the applicable tax rules |
| Corrected invoice | Records an approved change to a prior bill |
A business purchase is not automatically exempt from US sales tax. A VAT registration can affect the treatment of a cross-border transaction, but it is not a general exemption certificate.
How to add a tax ID to the Claude API account
For a Claude Console organization, Anthropic's published steps are:
- Sign in to the API Console.
- Open Settings → Organization.
- Enter or update the tax or VAT ID.
- Save the change.
Use the official Console tax ID guide to check the current steps and supported details.
This updates the tax ID. It does not establish that Anthropic has accepted a separate exemption claim.
What about Claude Pro, Max, or Team?
Use the instructions for the product you actually pay for. A personal Claude subscription, a Team plan, and an API organization have different billing settings.
Anthropic publishes separate guides for paid Claude accounts and Team plans. Have the person with billing access make the change.
If you pay another seller, such as an app store or reseller, use the invoice to identify who handled the sale before asking for a correction.
How to request a tax exemption review
First identify the legal reason the purchase would be exempt in the relevant jurisdiction. Then prepare:
- The legal name on the account and invoice.
- The account or organization identifier.
- The billing address and jurisdiction.
- The invoice numbers and dates involved.
- The exemption type and supporting certificate or other required evidence.
- Whether the request concerns future charges, past charges, or both.
Use Anthropic's official support route and ask which secure channel to use for documents. Do not send credentials or payment card details.
The public tax ID guides linked above do not establish a general self-service exemption approval process. Follow support's instructions for your case.
What if the billing address is wrong?
Correct it through the billing settings for the relevant product. Anthropic's billing address guide explains that tax calculation uses the billing address and describes the available update paths.
Use the accurate business location for the purchase. Changing an address just to avoid tax does not establish the right treatment.
Can a tax ID change remove tax from old invoices?
Do not assume it does. Anthropic's paid-account guidance says tax ID changes apply to future invoices. Ask support to review a specific past charge if you believe it was wrong.
Keep the original invoice, your request, and any corrected invoice or credit. Record only the adjustment actually approved; a pending support request is not a refund.
Does nonprofit status make every purchase exempt?
No. The applicable jurisdiction and purchase must qualify, and the seller may need valid supporting evidence. A federal tax status alone does not settle every state sales tax question.
For companies selling AI services, the separate question is what tax to charge your own customers. Our AI services sales tax guide covers that review.
